While legal experts have been divided as to who the jury favors, defense attorney Jose Baez said he believes the jury “clearly favors the defense,” adding that women may side with Zimmerman over issues of self-defense. Even though jurors are not supposed to be dismissed for reasons of race, Baez said the defense won by limiting people of color on the panel. “Race was the elephant in the room and they slayed it,” said Baez. Miami criminal defense lawyer Larry Handfield said he thought prosecutors could benefit from the jury’s gender. “When you have a panel that is dominated by females, they bring in the parental, maternal instincts of being sympathetic toward the victim, who was a young kid in high school,” Handfield said. I believe Handfield is overlooking a key factor—this was an Afrikan American youth; a youth whom the media has criminalized, and who is often, especially in the mind of white men and women, the usual suspect.
2-If this case was a “Stand Your Ground” case, the defense would have the burden to prove that Zimmerman should not be held legally responsible for the shooting. That law, which can protect a shooter from even going to trial, wasn't designed for someone who starts a fight and then loses the fight he initiated. Understanding this, Zimmerman's lawyers advised George to waived a pre-trial Stand Your Ground hearing and go directly to trial and simply argued classic self-defense, which is easier to defend. It doesn't matter who started the fight, in a classic self-defense, all that matters is if Zimmerman shot Martin because he reasonably believed it was the only way to protect himself from "great bodily harm." That's the law and all the defense has to do is create reasonable doubt. And this they have done—first, in the case of John Good who said he saw Martin on top, whereas Selma Mora stated she saw Zimmerman on top; and second by Zimmerman's mother and uncle, Jorge Mesa, both stating the voice yelling for help was George, while Trayvon's mother stated it was her son, Trayvon.
3-Zimmerman's father is a retired Virgina Supreme Court Magistrate. He is a respected and revered figure. It is highly unlikely that his son will do any time. When do the children of the rich and powerful ever do the time for doing the crime? It's called privilege and it is an unseen but real thing is a class based society.
P.S. Look, I didn't even mention that white supremacy dictates Zimmerman be found innocent.
