So I was dumbfounded when I heard that Black women were the least desirable when it came to recent online dating study. The study conducted by okcupid.com indicated that men of all races, including Black men were less likely to date Black women. The part of the study that really hurt was that Afrikan American women were the group least likely to be contacted by men of their own race. This means that we don't even want them. What the hell?! We don't want our own women!?
Another study at the University of California Berkeley indicated that Afrikan American men were more likely to date white women than Black women. This was particularly telling because the study demonstrated that homophily, a social science term which means "love of the same," was still a factor in online dating. The researchers thought the internet would play a role in eroding reluctance to date outside ones own race. However, Black violated this assumption more than any other group.
Prof. Mendelsohn’s one of the researchers did not draw conclusions as to why online daters made certain decisions, but he acknowledged that the results indicated that the U.S has not entered into a so-called ‘post racial era.’ That people even when ". . . the constraints of segregation are lifted by technology, . . . . don’t act all that differently.” He continued, “Segregation remains a state of mind as much as it is a physical reality.”
Nevertheless, the study indicates that more than 80 percent of the communication initiated by whites was to other whites. Only 3 percent went to blacks. Black members of the same site were more open to dating whites and were ten times more likely to contact whites. Black men were actually slightly more likely to initiate contact with white women than black women. Professor Mendelsohn, attributed this to the influence of cultural imperatives on all American men. “In this country, our notions of feminine attractiveness are based almost entirely on images of white women… the hypothesis that some people have argued is that there is no surprise that black men should contact white women, because that’s where we get our notions of who’s pretty.”
One thing these two studies indicate is that White supremacy is real and we have taken a hell of a beating from it. Moreover, it would seem that the genocidal-fix is in: Black men don't want our women (online), and now they don't want us; males and females are in growing numbers abandoning heterosexuality for alternative sexualities that are anti-natal; our birthrate is declining; and disease is continuing to ravish our communities (AIDS is still the Monster!).
P.S. The good thing this is only a survey, and surveys can be wrong, misleading, too narrow, or subject to a number of statistical flaws. Keep hope alive, LOL! But clearly we have a lot of work to do and it begins with building and sustaining Black male-Black female relationships.
